A Mom's Year

Creating a comfortable life one moment at a time

Mystery Plant

My aunt gave me this beautiful bouquet that she bought at the farmers’ market on Sunday. I love the unusual combination of sunflowers and leaves and, um, green thingies. Does anyone have any idea what the green pods are? If you can identify the plant, I’ll be happy to knit you a hat or a set of Christmas tree coasters or something.

I know this one! Balloon plant or Gomphocarpus physocarpus. I think they’re awesome. I shall try and grow some in our polytunnel next year.

Hurray, Stephanie! You’re a better knitter than I am, so you won’t want one of my creations. 😉 Maybe you’ll just be happy knowing you helped my perplexed family.

Aren’t they the offspring of the plant from Little Shop of Horrors? Ha!

I think you’re right, Peg. The kids were expecting tiny aliens to pop out.

Someone on Facebook said they’re also called African Milkweed.
