A Mom's Year

Creating a comfortable life one moment at a time

Chinese New Year Parties / Planning Phase

Dragon Masks

Whew! This was another one of those busy-literally-every-minute days. They’re not my favorite, but at least I get to check Annual Physical off my list. (Am I the only one who would rather visit the dentist than have a routine check-up?)

Next on the agenda are the Chinese New Year parties we’re hosting for Will’s and Lily’s classrooms over the next couple of days. We’ve done quite a few of these celebrations in the past, so we have the format down pretty well. I just had to come up with a good dragon activity for the Year of the Dragon. I like the Dragons on Parade over at Kaboose. We’ll have to skip painting the streamers, but otherwise I think the dragons will work great for a parade through the hallways.

(If your kids aren’t in school yet, the dragons would be a fun way to introduce them to the Chinese New Year. Just get some Chinese take-out, have a little parade around the house, and you have a party!)

I’m also brushing up on my knowledge of the Chinese Zodiac. I think most of the kids in Will’s class are Horses and Goats, and the kids in Lily’s class are Monkeys and Roosters. The kids always love to hear what their animal personalities are like.

The only other things I have to do are make sure we have enough red envelopes and “coins” and dig out some decorations and the Chinese music CD (for ambiance). I stocked up on Pocky and Lily’s favorite rice cakes this afternoon. I was happily surprised to discover that you can now buy Pocky at Target. Maybe we need to get a little more exotic with our snacks now that Pocky is widely available. Dried squid, maybe?

I generally get along well with myself, but someti I generally get along well with myself, but sometimes I make me crazy. Case in point: some BHS staff want to order some more of the Sparty Snowman cards we gave them for Christmas. Great! It occurs to me that I should add Happy Crow Press and our website info to the back of the cards. And here’s where I drive myself crazy: I think, “Can publishing companies make books AND cards? Do any other companies do that?” Am I serious?! Who cares what other companies do? Maybe we’ll be the first one to do it! Like Muriel Strode said, “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
