A Mom's Year

Creating a comfortable life one moment at a time

Country of the Week: Australia / Fairy Bread

I’m afraid Australia got the short end of the stick last week since we were so busy preparing for Lily’s birthday party. But we did manage to make Australian meat pies, eat Wiley Wallaby Liquorice, and watch Babe and The Rescuers Down Under. (I cobbled together the meat pies by combining a bunch of different online recipes.)

We also made Fairy Bread. An Australian friend of mine from my Special Olympics International days said that Fairy Bread is very popular at children’s birthday parties. So we made some for Lily’s party.

I looked up the recipe online and you’ll never guess what’s in Fairy Bread: white bread, butter, and sprinkles! How easy is that?

Most of the girls at the party liked the Fairy Bread. There were a few who said they didn’t, but I think they were just being dramatic.

Shannon would you believe it was invented by some poor mum back in the 60’s who burnt her birthday cake and had nothing for the kiddies who were arriving for the party but bread!
The real trick with fairy bread is to butter it with the crusts on, put the sprinkles on a plate and push the bread butter side down into the sugar coating! this way it all sticks, then you can cut off crusts and cut into triangles or use a shape cutter.
Lamingtons are another Aussie fave. Sponge cake, sometimes with a jam layer, coated on all sides with a thin choc icing and rolled in coconut. Yum!
Always loving your posts Shannon. Lx

Lynda, thank you for the great info! I love the story about Fairy Bread’s start. The Lamingtons sound fabulous, too. We were also told we have to try Tim Tams, but I think they’re only in our area during the holidays.
