A Mom's Year

Creating a comfortable life one moment at a time

January 1, 2013

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! How have you been? Did you enjoy the holidays? Were they crazy? Relaxing? A little of both?

Ours included the usual craziness (when will I learn to start shopping earlier?), but we found time to relax, too. The biggest hit for us this year was the ice rink that Tim made. He spent hours and hours leveling the ground and building up layers of ice until he’d created an amazing little rink. We spent much of the kids’ vacation on the ice, enjoying the snowflakes that seemed to appear whenever we skated.

Are you excited for 2013? I love the clean slate of a new year. And I’m happy to get back to blogging. I had this idea back in October that I’d be strict with myself and only blog if I a) wrote 1,000 words or b) sent out submissions. Well. It turns out that taking away blogging was not a good incentive. I missed everyone, and I also realized how much this little blog helps me focus on what I’d like to matter in life.

So I hope you’ll forgive my absence and lack of communication all these weeks. I never thought so much time would go by—and so quickly!

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? I feel like I’m constantly making resolutions throughout the year, so there’s nothing that different about New Year’s Day. But I was intrigued by the 100 Resolutions for 2013 idea posted by Sarah Goldschadt. (Lily and I are following Sarah’s Craft-a-Day book this year; more on that to come later this week.) I printed one out here and so far I’ve listed:

  • plan daily menus
  • paint stair risers
  • make apple cider donuts
  • make the loft into a reading nook
  • find Japanese lessons online for Lexie
  • do monthly knitting projects for Christmas gifts
  • get the tiramisu recipe ironed out
  • have “Fiction Friday” (name?) on blog
  • write and submit 5 days a week
  • finish the master bathroom
  • make creme brulee with torch bought 10 years ago
  • do more yoga
  • plan better for next Christmas

Only 87 to go! How about you? Could you come up with 100 Resolutions? Or do you prefer just one or two big ones?

Happy New Year. Glad to be getting your blog again. No New Year resolutions for me. The holidays were especially good this year.

Welcome back, Shannon! Awesome job with the ice rink, Tim. Brings back so many fond memories of skating with all my siblings and friends. Just made creme brulee this fall, with our torch bought several years ago – must be the right time to do it. Happy New Year!

Thanks, everyone! It feels good to be back.

Joan, what a coincidence on the creme brulee! And, yes, Tim did a brilliant job on the ice rink. He definitely knows how to embrace our winters!

So glad to see you back! I am just catching up on your new entries. I usually don’t make resolutions but last year I read the Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin and really was inspired. This year I read her next book Happier at Home and I added a few others – one of my new favorites have a home mantra that you recite as you enter your home, something that reminds you how much home means to you! I may try the 100 resolutions with my kids. Happy New Year to you and yours!

Thank you so much, Soleil! I read the Happiness Project, too, and really enjoyed it. I’ll have to check out her other book, too.
